      SUPERMAN – FIRST IMPRESSIONS

The buzz and promotional effort from WB continue for the relaunch of the DC Comics Cinematic line, more commonly known as the DCU versus its previous era DCEU. This week we got a glimpse of the first-ever trailer of the new Superman movie, starring David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan.

First thing fans of superhero comics movies and the DC Man of Steel will realize is that on camera, Corenswet doesn’t look anything like Henry Cavill, despite so many hype and promo builders writing columns and revues showing us in portrait photos how closely the two looked alike. There was little consolation for fans of Cavill who were pushing the studio for the actor in a sequel to Man of Steel. Cavill had only starred in one solo movie, the second outing was him and Ben Afleck in Superman vs Batman and then on to the Justice League, which was deemed a massive sham and had lackluster performance at the box office.

But JL’s box office woes are nothing to subsequent flops like The Flash, Black Adam, Shazam 2 and Blue Beetle, a string of big budget movies that made Justice League look like a big winner, but was the reason many in industry claim the studio didn’t want Cavill anymore as Superman.

His replacement, Corenswet, according to many industry observers is a “downgrade” from Cavill, movie speak that says Henry looks way better in the old suit than the new guy in a newly designed Superman suit. And critics also pointed out that the new suit is also a “downgrade” from the previous iteration.  How will all of this play out in July of 2025 when the new lynchpin in a series of new WB superhero movies will open in theaters? Tons of film insiders and movie industry critics and investors are gritting their teeth.

The first trailer in a series of teasers opens with Superman having hit the ground at high velocity is badly beaten, injured and bleeding. So badly injured he has to call in his trusty best friend, Krypto, Superman’s dog from Krypton who is equally super powered and can perform most of the feats that Superman can, like flight, super speed, super strength, heat vision, super hearing, etc.

The overhead shot of Superman lying on the snow, he looks a far cry from the super muscular and chiseled Henry Cavill, in fact this Superman comes across a little punchy and fatty and his suit looks not only baggy but also a bit of a copycat from 1980s and 1990s Members Only bargain basement jacket that become a big seller in that era with the shoulder pads, the contour lines and the manner in which the S shield/logo is inset on his chest. We cut away to Superman in his every day identity as Clark Kent and once more the look is slightly off with his curly hair and coif, more of an 1980s look and a bit more of a nerd’s nerd in the post 2020 era, with touches that vibe off the John Oates hairdo from the Hall & Oates prime time rock n roll era. Now you might think this is a good thing, because Clark needs to really hide in plain sight and look as little as possible as Superman without glasses, but Corenswet manages to look creepy funny and less the hard-nosed reporter that keeps Lois Lane in check and on her toes as Cavill’s portrayal did. Nope, from our very early glimpses in this trailer, this Clark Kent is even less inspired than Christopher Reeves original interpretation of Clark. We are certain James Gunn didn’t overlook these details and that the full-length feature will give us a more interesting impression of Clark than this brief peek.

Nicholas Hoult of Mad Max Furiosa is on hand in the trailer as Lex Luthor. We get to see very little, but as in all Superman movies, Luthor being the archetypal villain his role normally dominates the story. How will this Superman adventure weave the face off of this villain against our super hero remains to be seen. We know that Luthor may possess the brains to cause the demise of Superman but he would not have the strength to inflict the kind of injury we see at the beginning of the trailer.

Another off-putting element in this first glimpse is what could be a naked attempt to appeal to Asian, especially Chinese and Japanese audiences, in that we have a very strange fire-breathing creature going up against our hero, in what seems like a scene from Godzilla or some of the fantasy dragons from folklore Kung Fu movies. Both the special effects and the manner in which the animated creature plays against the skyline of Metropolis is a downgrade from the Man of Steel’s epic battle with Zod. The entire action sequence looks tawdry and out of synch with the rest of the trailer.

Finally, the entire film seems to have been color graded to blue or a shade of cyan, which is often less than ideal. You can still see all the normal daytime colors of the scenery, buildings, skies and ground, but the entire look is as if someone handed out these special glasses inside the theater and they have blue color tint lenses, so the entire movie has an unnatural forced color and glow to it.  How will this play out over a two-hour viewing session is unknown just yet but it felt somewhat odd and a little off with the trailer.

There was a big part of the first John Wick movie (2014) in which the color of the walls, the actors’ suits and other décor elements color matched and created a strong and delightfully harmonized visual color scheme. It may have been sheer coincidence in John Wick or may have been the result of strong set design and creative control. However, if this was the idea behind color grading the Superman trailer and if this color tinting scheme is employed over the entire film, it is entirely different from the John Wick approach and will yield a very different result and a lesser than glowing artistic look for the 2025 Superman. All of this does not imply that the entire movie in July may be of a completely different caliber than what 2 minutes and 20 seconds can communicate to the audience.

Yep here is the latest cross-eyed but sexy, masculine, strong image of Superman (Dreary David) giving us a superhero filled with pupose, confidence and poise (sarcasm if you didnt guess) as the flag bearer of our country while we menace our allies and threaten to take Greenland and attack Denmark, by force if necessary, so here comes our Golden American Hero from Hollywood, always self described as the Church of Hope, just bring your money and donations, whatever you can, alms to the Poor, alms to the poor!

Really dudes, it is not me who came up with the “cross-eyed” label, it is all over the web, this little clip now being flogged to the dreambeat of “high treason and high controversy” just to alert moviegoers to this new SUPERMAN movie, as if the entire world hasnt heard already.  Only in Hollywood and their PR machine can they be presumed to be blind and deaf so as to constantly beat the public into “awarein’ass” with constant buzz from their “critics” and online “reviewers”, in reality part of their advertising and publicity network worldwide.

In the Superbowl clip I remember he looked even more cross eyed than this, did they clean it up already in this shot?

again so smart about my source of inspiration, Mighty Mouse and Big Ears Everywhere Radaris (Beer), ugh, park that “I got a bad feeling ’bout this” and be positive for once in your while, now I know “the optics” look bad LMAO but that crossed-eye look can fizzle quickly once in the theater with popcorn and syrupy soda all over you and your date!  Do NOT bother slipping your hands on her tray to mop up with your pocket clean-Ex, she’ll you out as date rape with a big loud shriek, so don’t spoil the mood for all the other moviegoers, keep your hands onto your soda and popcorn, at all times.

Dont forget before Superstud shows up on the screen with the big FAN’FARE, take a knee and scream “UNCLE. UNCLE!!!!”  BTW FYI my uncle is an Ass-Whole because?  You-Ass-Aye, You-Ass-Aye Goooooo MeeKayyyy!!!!

I miss the Gustin Grant TV Flash fresh first season, we really got spoiled with those 23 episodes and then like another 12 or 15 episodes of season 2 were also above average quality, hmmmm, now we have David Gore n’ Wet and I cannot really picture him anywhere as good as Henry Cavill, not good, I caught a glimpse of some bs video clip on YouTube claims Cavill will soon be featured in a Marvel MCU film in a big role, not a cameo, but the dude went all over the map, mentioned this and that just to make the segment long enough to be irritating without ever getting to the point and then the end, no actual news of Cavill being featured in an MCU film, the production has an unknown name, is an unknown part of an unknow series from the MCU and there is an unknown dateline for being in theaters.  There you have it, total waste of my time.

And it’s like that with a tons of news video clips on YouTube enough to really alienate good fans.  What the hell happened to the Hollywood media machine being there to support a movie rather than push out a ton of crap making the film itself the short advertisement for a ton of nonsensical content on YouTube – discussions, easter eggs (ughhh) and some fleeting moment that is supposedly the pivotal element of the movie and sometimes zero updates on the movie – just endless conjectures disguised as entertainment affiliated with the film.

YouTube and other media outlets into comic books information for fans has become a wasteland of blighted drivel.  who is watching or reading this stuff?  I hardly lookup that kind of online material anymore, just disgusting what some morons are doing to ruin the entire thing.
